I had the pleasure of meeting Rachel way back in June when she came along to my free hypnobirthing taster session at The Isbourne Holistic Centre in Cheltenham. Rachel decided to book a private course of hypnobirthing to prepare for the birth of her baby and came to pregnancy relaxation classes towards the end of her pregnancy. I feel so honoured to be able to share her birth story with you. Thanks for sharing Rachel……
My birth story….
My contractions woke me up at 12.30am on Wednesday, I managed to doze in between them for a few hours and used my relaxation tracks to help me rest where possible. I got up about 2.30am and woke my hubby but when I started moving around the contractions seemed to slow down (I had been having regular braxton hicks for several hours most evenings for a week which fizzled out every time so I was hoping this time it wouldn’t be the same). I decided to try and go back to bed; I focussed on my breathing during contractions and used my safe space and ‘3,2,1 relax’ to help me relax and focus my thoughts. I felt good at this point and was managing the contractions…the excitement kicked in too!
I got up again about half an hour later and called my dad to come over and look after my daughter. The contractions had stepped up a gear and were coming every few minutes although I seemed to have one stronger one and then one not so strong. We left for hospital and got there ok but we stupidly hadn’t checked out where we were going once there (I’ve been super organised with everything else, but not this). Anyway, to cut a long story short we ended up hanging out outside Gloucester hospital for about 40 minutes in the pouring rain whilst in labour! My contractions were strong and I was even feeling a little of that bearing down feeling at this point! All the entrances we tried were locked and the birth centre staff thought we were at a different entrance when trying to find us.
We finally got into the birth centre about 5.10am, I was offered an examination but decided to leave it for a little while as the midwife hinted that perhaps we’d be disappointed with the progress but she gave us the choice. She suggested a bath to get things moving but said I couldn’t have any gas and air until I was in established labour (she felt my contractions were still a bit irregular at this point). I had a bath with oils which was nice (and warmed me up!!) and lots of back rubbing from hubby helped. I then decided about 20 minutes later to be examined as the bearing down feeling was becoming pretty intense (my waters hadn’t broken at this point). The midwife examined me and said I was fully dilated and that she wasn’t sure if there would be time to get me in the pool but we could try. She then gave me gas and air and I was very grateful as it helped me stay calm (and feel slightly drunk)!
I got into the pool at 6.05am and with my next contraction my waters bulged out. My baby was then born with two further contractions at 6.15am weighing 8lb 15oz. The time of the second stage of labour on my notes was 1 minute! I feel so blessed to have been able to bring my beautiful boy into the world safely and as much as it was all quite quick and intense I couldn’t be happier with my labour and birth (apart from the bit outside in the rain of course).
The time spent during this pregnancy practicing Hypnobirthing and relaxation has been invaluable and I can’t thank you enough for your support. I would highly recommend your courses and classes.
I wish all of you ladies lots of luck with your pregnancies, births and babies…enjoy xxx
