Sophie was pregnant with her second child and had been attending pregnancy relaxation classes for a while. It was a complete pleasure to get to know Sophie during this time. Here is her (short!) birth story………
Just thought I would let you know that our not so little boy was born last week on Thursday 19th January, weighing 9lb 1oz.
I haven’t got much of a story as it was a speedy labour – Oscar couldn’t wait to get out and join us. I woke up Thursday morning at 7am with a few pains, sent other half to work saying I will keep you updated and was left with my 3 year old. I had a bath at 8am and by 9am I said to my other half I think you should come home as feel these are definitely contractions (up to then I wasn’t 100% sure if it was just Braxton hicks). I had been able to count through each contraction and just breath (definitely had your voice in my head saying 321 relax!). It is much harder to create that relaxing environment when your 3 year is asking for her breakfast and Peppa Pig is on in the background!
Hubbie got home at 10am and I by this time I had called the birth unit twice just to let them know I had started and was really unsure when I should go in. I was having contractions every 3-5 mins but they were only about 45 seconds long. My mum arrived shortly after to take my little girl and then I called the birth unit at 10.45 to say I think I need to come in. They said I sounded ok but could come in to be checked at triage as they were full at the moment. I did think to myself I don’t think I need to go to triage but let’s just go. I struggled to make it to the car and suddenly felt like I wanted to push but felt that wasn’t right.
We got to hospital about 11.10am – after a bit of a panic about where was the emergency parking! We hadn’t really thought this through beforehand – I definitely recommend going to find it prior to being in labour!
As I sat on a bed in triage the midwife said I could go straight to delivery (she could hear me trying to push!). Hubbie went to move the car and we looked at my texts afterwards of him saying just coming at 11.39am. With just gas and air the next 30 mins went in a flash and at 12.08pm baby Oscar was born.
Unfortunately after such a quick birth I had to go to theatre afterwards, leaving baby and daddy some bonding time. Partners should be prepared for this happening. Being a second time dad my hubbie felt ok to be left alone with baby (but he dressed him in the wrong outfit!) but it could be quite daunting as it is unexpected!
Good luck with all the pregnancies and births! It is such a lovely time to spend with your baby but no-one can really prepare you for the lack of sleep, even though I have done it before you certainly forget!
