I always say that I get to work with the loveliest people and I really mean it! I met Jane and Jay back in early 2015 when Jane was pregnant with her first child, Arthur. When she got back in touch to say she was pregnant with her second child I was so happy to have the opportunity to work with her again. I knew that hypnobirthing could help Jane prepare for a different birth experience and could give her and Jay the tools they needs to have a more calm, relaxed and enjoyable pregnancy and birth. I was over the moon to hear about Elsie’s arrival and how much of a positive experience it had been this time round. Jane has kindly written about her experiences in preparing for birth second time round…..
Jane’s birth preparation story…
The day I found out I was pregnant for the second time was a day filled with very mixed emotions for me. I was thrilled to be pregnant again and felt very blessed and lucky, but, on the flip side I immediately felt significantly apprehensive about the impending labour and birth. This negative pang slowly developed into a dull panic and a few weeks later I decided to contact Yvonne, my previous NCT teacher to ask for her advice on what I could do to help prepare myself this time around ….
My hypnobirthing adventure was soon to begin.
After discussing my situation with Yvonne, I finally felt a sense of calm wash over me knowing that the traumatic labour and birth I had endured with my son was hopefully a one time event. Yvonne immediately put me at ease, explaining that hypnobirthing techniques could help support myself and my partner, not only with the labour and birth, but also as a relaxation/preparation tool during my pregnancy.
We attended one of Yvonne’s hypnobirthing day courses when I was six months pregnant and it was quite simply, wonderful. Not only did I leave at the end of the day feeling physically relaxed, mentally, I felt much stronger and prepared for a second labour.
The following weeks, leading up to the birth were a hive of trepidation, excitement and exhaustion. I had a two year old son to support and care for, along with a household to run and part time work to focus on. I used the the hypnobirthing relaxation techniques a lot during this time, mainly in the evenings. I suffered with pregnancy related itchiness, but, luckily for me, the massage techniques we had learnt really helped with this issue. As a mental preparation tool, the birth affirmations were wonderful to share with my partner and really calmed me down. I primarily used them as a reminder not to be scared and that my body was completely equipped to birth a baby.
At this point in the game, however, I wasn’t entirely sure if I was going to forge ahead with a vbac or, book in for an elective cesarean section. My Consultant advised that a vbac was perfectly safe for me, but, during a routine appointment at 38 weeks, I found out that the baby was in a breech position and unless she moved (which was unlikely to happen), an elective would be advisable. In hindsight, it was the best decision I ever made.
Even on the morning of the elective (whereby my anxiety went through the roof), I was able to use the focusing techniques we had learnt during the course to help calm my nerves and focus on the beautiful, impending birth of my daughter.
I feel very lucky to have met Yvonne during my first pregnancy and to have shared my second pregnancy with her as well. Hypnobirthing is an exceptionally beautiful and useful calming and relaxation tool as it focuses on not only the physical side of pregnancy, labour and birth, but also really helps with the mental preparation required. I cannot recommend this course enough.
