I am the first to tell the mums that come to my classes that it is so important for them to take time out and look after themselves during pregnancy and when their baby arrives. But I have increasingly become aware over the last few months that I have not been taking the advice I give. I am so busy all the time and it is really starting to take its toll on me.
I decided that I had to do something about this and exercise was the obvious choice. I have fallen out of love with going to the gym over the past few years but needed to do something active. I was very intrigued when I saw that a new yoga studio was opening nearby! I love yoga and always talk in my classes about the benefits of yoga for pregnancy but the last time I made it to a class I was pregnant myself! So I bravely booked onto a session at the shiny and new Quay Yoga Studio in Gloucester on Sunday evening and off I went (nervously!). I needn’t have been worried though. The studio is a gorgeous and welcoming space that doesn’t feel big and overwhelming. You are met with a massive smile, bright colours, plants and an amazing colouring wall! The class itself was lovely! I booked the twilight relaxation class as it sounded less scary and it was perfect. Yoga by candle and twinkly lights was fabulous and there were lots of adaptations for beginners and unfit (me!) and lots of encouragement to try new things. It was just what I needed!
The studio is offering an introductory price of 30 days for £30 so you can try as many classes as possible. I decided that this could be a good jump start for me so signed up and went along last night for another class – this one not so gentle but so much fun! Again there are lots of modifications but what I loved is that it really felt like I was working hard and doing myself some good. I could clear my mind, focus on my breath and not be thinking about emails, social media, checking my phone, my PhD or what my children should be doing. I’m not going to lie – my favourite part of both classes is the savasana (laying on your mat under a blanket and focusing on your body and breathing!) as it is just what I need to calm my mind and help me tune into myself again.
This is one of the very reasons why I love my pregnancy relaxation classes so much. They allow pregnant mums the opportunity to take time out, tune into their bodies and their babies and relax. They are also surrounded by positivity and support which is perfect!
So, I am still a very strong advocate for taking time out (doing whatever it is that suits you) and will be making sure that I also take note of my own advice! I’m still not sure that you’ll see me do a headstand in 8 weeks Jodie(!!!!!) but I will see you in class! I will keep plodding on and most importantly continue having some me-time.
If you would like more information about my pregnancy relaxation classes please get in touch or click here. If you would like more information on Quay Yoga Studio pay them a little visit here (I hear there may be pregnancy yoga classes appearing on the timetable in the future too). Who knows I might even see you in the studio (I’ll be the one who is a sweaty mess and falling over!).
